2.      Brief Description of the Institution

Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) is a state university offering graduate and postgraduate degrees in many different fields. It is a young university -founded only 40 years ago- but has already achieved an outstanding international reputation for its high-quality teaching and research. It is generally recognized as one of the best Spanish universities in both national and international rankings (it is at position no. 153 in the ranking Top 500 World Universities -objective ranking by Jiao Tong University, Shangai-). UAM is a modern and democratic institution in which decisions are taken with the participation of all the members of the community, and which is characterised by its strong social commitment and participation in society.

Most of the faculties and specialised institutes are on the attractive Cantoblanco campus 15 km North of Madrid. The Faculty of Medicine is near La Paz Hospital and several Schools of Nursing belonging to the UAM are in different hospitals in Madrid.

The UAM is very aware of its mission -providing high quality education to its students- which mean that its objectives are not restricted to the academic curricula, but include preparing the student both professionally and as democratic citizens. The university offers an integrated approach to education, combining teaching and research and encouraging the participation of its students and researchers. In order to make this possible, the faculties and schools have many well equipped lecture rooms, modern libraries, laboratories etc.

XChem research group, led by Prof. Fernando Martín, belongs to the Department of Chemistry. Its activity focuses on the theoretical study of the dynamics of quantum systems; from the smallest, such as in the interaction of atoms or small molecules with ultrashort laser pulses, to medium-sized systems. Fernando Martín leds two other research lines focused on the study of clusters and surfaces. The quality of these groups is reflected by the number and quality of publications in the last ten years: almost 200 papers, among which 3 in Science, 2 in Nature, 1 in Nature Physics, 1 in Nature Chemistry, 4 in Proc. of National Academy of Sciences, 1 in NanoLetters, 1 in ACS Nano, 2 in Angewandte Chemie, etc.

4.      Research / Project Description

The XChem group is formed by an interdisciplinary team of researchers and collaborators that aim at developing state-of-the-art time-dependent methods to address newly emerging fundamental questions about the role of sub-fs and attosecond coherent electron and nuclear dynamics in physics and chemistry.

In particular, the XChem project aims at developing theoretical approaches and computational tools for time-resolving and controlling (i) molecular autoionization in the presence of ultra-fast vibrational motion, (ii) attosecond charge migration dynamics in molecules upon ionization, (iii) coupled electron-nuclear dynamics during non-adiabatic transitions, with emphasis on the role of electronic coherence created prior or during the transition, and (iv) chemical reactivity (www.xchem.uam.es). The XChem project is currently funded by the European Research Council (ERC Advanced Grant n° 290853).

Talented, enthusiastic young researchers are welcome to join this leading group to develop a project in the framework of the research area described above but going beyond the current state of the art.

Hosting Institution (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) guarantees enough computational resources to carry out the project through its Computing Center and one of the most powerful High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities in Europe, HPC-Europa, through the Mare Nostrum Barcelona Supercomputing Center.

5.      Who can apply?

At the deadline for the submission of proposals (10/09/2015), researchers (*):

·         shall be in possession of a doctoral degree or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience.

·         must not have resided or carried out their main activities in the country of Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the abovementioned deadline.

·         We seek for applicants possessing a PhD in Chemical Physics, strong background in atomic, molecular and optical physics, attosecond physics, scattering theory, numerical methods and programming.

6.      Contact person

Interested researchers should direct their expressions of interest to Fernando Martín (xchem.position@uam.es)

7.      Applications: documents to be submitted and deadlines

Interested researchers should send a detailed CV, a motivation letter including a draft project proposal, and contact information for 2 references to xchem.positions@uam.es. Suitable candidates will be asked for further information.
